Reality check
It’s always around this time of year when I start thinking ‘I just can’t take it anymore’. Work has become a shouting match, the world seems to have turned into a grey mush and my body is screaming for vitamin D. Normally, a slight uplift in temperature, and the first tiny patch of blue sky I spot on leaving the office, are just enough for me to put the razor back in the shower.
However, I’m becoming slightly concerned that these annual signs of hope just won’t be enough to combat the general feeling of doom and gloom that has engulfed me since I first heard the words ‘global recession’ (As if ‘recession’ in itself wasn’t bad enough; with the addition of ‘global’ comes the realisation that there really is absolutely no where to turn; we’re no longer even allowed the ‘Oh well, we’ll just have to relocate somewhere cheap and sunny’ back up dream.) So, here I am; not only am I still holding the MAC3, but my mind keeps helpfully reminding me to make the cuts vertical, not horizontal.
In a last minute plea of Mercy (yes, I can’t get that Welsh girl out of my head either) I’ve decided to make the most of whatever signs of hope I can find; starting with Pancake Day this Tuesday. Flower, sugar, lemon, tossing and mucho alcohol here I come! (Not necessarily in that order – I hear lemon tossing can be quite stingy.)
During my extensive research of ‘things to celebrate’ I’ve also discovered that Pancake Day this year is falling 33 days before the 29th March: Yet another day that I’ll be celebrating as it’s when the clocks will ‘Spring’ forward; 6pm will become the current 5pm and the nights will get even lighter. But this year it’s extra special (and I can’t believe I haven’t been told about this before) because of the very fact that there are exactly 33 days between Pancake Day and the day the clocks go forward.
Now, I may well be getting desperate in my search for hope, but according to that well known and highly respected site: http://www.33dayspiral.co.uk:
‘33 has been an important number, deemed to be a potent number by ancient mystery schools, priests and prophets, shamans and holy men, mathematicians and teachers and masters of the studies of astrology, astronomy, and various religions. The number 33 is especially powerful and has been emphasized by great thinkers such as Rudolph Steiner, as a number of great power.
In the definitions of numbers, 33 is known to be one of 3 master numbers. (the others being 11 and 22). They are deemed to possess more potential than other numbers. The Master Number 33 represents a triangle of enlightenment. It is known as the most influential of all numbers. It is the Master teacher.
When expressed to the fullest – the number 33 focuses on considerable abilities towards the spiritual upliftment of mankind. What makes the number 33 especially impressive, is the high level of sincere devotion attributed to it. Another attribute is thought to be a determination to seek and understand wisdom before preaching to others. The number 33 in full force is considered to be very rare.
When found among core numbers, 33 stands for life path, hearts desire, expression, reasonability, maturity, communication, power and generative force. All of these are good reasons why we decided to use this magical number.’

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back – Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
So, this Tuesday, all we have to do is this and, by the time we enter daylight saving, everything will be fine:
Start it; you don’t have to be fancy. Keep moving; you don’t have to go crazy. Visualize; you don’t have to admit it. See the end result; it doesn’t have to be material. Expect miracles; they don’t have to be huge. Pretend you’ve arrived; you don’t have to dance on tables.
And above else – have fun!!!!!!!
