Reality check
I was speaking to my friend the other day about how we both tend to think ‘once I have done/have this, my life will be perfect.’ Although we both know this to be a complete fallacy, it still seems to be an unavoidable, uncontrollable and completely unrealistic fantasy that neither of us can shake.
As we talked further we realised that there are common hiccups which, on closer inspection, are in fact inevitable aspects of life. Here are a few to share with you. Feel free to comment and add to the list. Who knows – maybe, if we can redefine some of life’s more challenging moments as ‘forces of nature’, then what’s left will seem even closer to perfection…
So, here goes. Every now and again:
- Someone will speak to you like you’re dirt. (Remember, this always says more about them than you.)
- You’ll forget to save work on your computer and have to redo it.
- You, or someone else, will wash/dry your clothes at too hot a temperature.
- You’ll find a hair in your food.
- You’ll put a random household object in the fridge.
- You’ll get drunk and go a bit psycho. (I’m afraid this normally says more about you than who the psycho-ness is aimed at.)
- Someone will take an instant dislike to you, for no apparent reason.
- You’ll wear a horrifically misjudged outfit to a wedding.
- You’ll say something and no one will hear you.
- You’ll completely put your foot in it.
