Sexual Healing

So we’re a comfortable way into the 21st Century and thanks to the likes of Chardonnay, Sex and the City et al, we’re a sexually liberated species. It’s not taboo any longer to own a vibrator, have casual sex, own up to AND entertain your fantasies etc. but what are the negative side-effects of all this so-called freedom?

In an environment where sex sells everything, not suggestively, but blatantly (check Rihanna “come here rude boy, can you get it up?”), all barriers are coming down to the point of near desperation. What, for example, did the pornographic Kulis/Portman girl-on-girl scene in ‘Black Swan’ add to its already wavering plot? Nothing really, but I bet your boyfriend would pay to go and see it again and hey presto, the box office is smiling. It’s probably worthless to mention that the gender dialectic is always imbalanced, when was it ever not?

None of this is really new or remotely shocking. The depressing thing is that whilst sex in the media becomes increasingly prerequisite, the actual act of love is becoming a non-event (Happy Valentine’s Day). I could be speaking for myself here, but I don’t believe I’m alone in feeling that sex has lost its, well, sex. My only fear is that, how, if at all, can sex reclaim some of the sanctity it once had? In light of the language used by my just-turned-16 year old sister and her friends on facebook, I fear I’m fighting a losing battle.

On the plus side, just look at what we could look forward to in the future:

-Beyoncé’s next video featuring nipple tassles and ‘vajazzles’
-The Saturdays, (inspired by JLS’s condom range), bringing out their own range of coils… and then gang banging JLS in the ad to make a point: “Look, no babies!”
-Lady Gaga turning up to William and Kate’s wedding in full bondage gear
-Nigella Lawson sucking off a spoon and smothering her bosoms in lasagne
-…a National Institution of Promiscuity…and their awards ceremony the NIPs
-Christina Aguilera bringing out a fragrance called ‘Pussy’
