The lyrics of Adele’s Someone Like You are disturbing

So she’s heard that an ex of hers is happily married. And what does she do? She turns up uninvited on his doorstep in the hope that he’ll be able to tell from her face that she’s not over him. (It’s not clear what she does with her face to try to achieve this, but we can assume fake eyelashes are involved.)

She is then taken aback by how withdrawn he appears. (Again it’s not clear if this is his reaction to a crazy ex turning up out of the blue or the huge eyelashes. Probably both, in any instance you can hardly blame the guy.)

She resolves; ‘Never mind, I’ll find someone like you’ (she certainly knows how to make a guy feel special) before adding that she wishes nothing but the best for him. Ah, that must be why on hearing how happy he was she decided it was time to remind him of her face; To make his life even better. I get it now.

“Someone Like You”

I heard
That you’re settled down
That you
Found a girl
And you’re
Married now

I heard
That your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things
I didn’t give to you

Old friend
Why are you so shy?
Ain’t like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it.
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me it isn’t over

Never mind
I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg
I remember you said
“Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead.”
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead,
Yeah.

You know how
The time flies
Only yesterday
It was the time of our lives
We were born and raised
In a summer haze
Bound by the surprise
Of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it.
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me it isn’t over, yeah.

Never mind
I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg
I remember you said
“Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead”

Nothing compares
No worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes
And memories made.
Who would have known
How bittersweet
This would taste?

Never mind
I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg
I remember you said,
“Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead”

Never mind
I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me I beg
I remember you said
“Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead”

Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead

    And your tongue is, where?

Thanks for pointing out that the article is tongue in cheek. I hadn't noticed that.

What does anything matter, Erotic Dancer? The article is written tongue in cheek. The song sounds beautiful when Adele signs it, its just when you look at the lyrics on their own they are debatable.

Why are you doing this to this song? What does it matter? It's beautiful.

Lyrics sounds very sarcastic to me.

"I heard that you’re settled down" (Gave up, settled for stability, no longer young free and single).

"I heard That your dreams came true. Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you" (It was writer's dream to be married/tamed. She knows that no one could surpass her so she taunts him for accepting second best.

"I wish nothing but the best for you too" This could have two meanings. Either "two" as in wishing ex and new wife the best; or "too" sarcastically replying to her ex's parting greeting wishing her, 'the best' after breaking her heart.

Maybe she does behave like a "bunny boiler" turning up on his doorstep but his pragmatic decision not to be hurt by goodbye isn't commendable either.
