Wikileaks has exposed the real world crushing the world we once thought we knew.
It has also exposed Julian Assange and his intimate sex life. Exposed governments are fighting fire with fire. He lived by using the sword of public scrutiny so maybe he’s going to die by the same sword, his reputation ruined by a honey-trap.
In the world we once knew our friends’ sons and husbands were fighting the Taliban and supporting the government in Afghanistan to make the world safer.
In the real world, the US knows that, “[Karzai is] a paranoid and weak individual unfamiliar with the basics of nation-building.”
In Julian’s world he was a good guy loved by women. In the real world he is a rapist denied bail for sexual assault.
In our cosy familiar world our leaders know what they are doing; while under the diplomatic spot light they are seen as weak and ineffective, like ex Australian PM Kevin Rudd described as “mistake-prone control freak” who makes “snap announcements without consulting other countries or within the Australian government”.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is described as “feckless and vain” and had profited from a “nefarious connection” with Russian PM Vladimir Putin.
Through the Internet we know Julian’s intimate bedroom actions and scumbag promises. He promised to wear condom then didn’t. He carried on with sex although his partner changed her mind. A stag or a slag depending on how you look at it.
Although this is not rape as we know it in the UK. Here rape is about coercion, about was force used or whether the victim resists. Swedish law is better as it is about consent. So agreeing to wear a condom then not doing so or not stopping in mid-flow when requested in Sweden is sexual assault or rape. So the battle of the sexes continues.
The news channels say the cold war is over; the leaks say different, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed a confidential cable saying allies in Nato had agreed to expand the contingency plan to defend Poland, to include the Baltic states.
The actual details of what happened are hard to come by, and are largely filtered through tabloid sources that are quick to offer crucial facts like the hair color of the women (blonde) and the clothes they wore (pink, tight), but it sounds like the sex was consensual on the condition that a condom was used.
It also sounds like in one case, a condom use was negotiated for and Assange agreed to wear a condom but didn’t, and the woman didn’t realize it until after they had sex; in the second case, it sounds like the condom broke and the woman told Assange to stop, which he did not.
This is of course speculation based on the bare-bones reported description of events, but it’s at least clear that “this is a case of a broken condom” isn’t close to the whole story.
It’s also worth pointing out that the charge is actually a quite minor one in Sweden, and the punishment is a $700 fine.
The threat of war is never far away. Heavy Sunday papers trumpet that nuclear weapons are bad and that nuclear proliferation is worse yet in the cold light of day the cables say; The US urged China to stop a shipment of missile components from North Korea to Iran in 2007, and also expressed concern over Chinese computer hacking.
If the facts of Julian’s case resemble the leaks, honey-trap or no honey-trap then Julian is a douche-bag.

It is now Julian (maybe the sexual bully) who is a victim of bullying. If he dies mysteriously, alone in a wood, committing suicide by slitting his wrists (like David Kelly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_David_Kelly ) then with his death, part of all of us dies. That part that loves truth even when it makes us unconformable.

I was taught that the UK occupies the moral high ground never giving in to blackmail, paying kidnap ransoms or bribes. However, the truth is some what more disappointing. Apply a little pressure and moral and judicial independence can be forgotten. Who isn't a douche-bag at some point in their life? The problem is that IT, especially the web, has evolved at such a fast pace recently that now too many people (douche-bags) from all over the world are getting involved before the necessary structures and processes have been put in place to ensure effective communication. This really could be the beginning of the end.
