Last night I surprised myself by doing something I never thought I’d do in a million years……….I actually pressed the red button on my remote control. ‘What made you do such a thing?’ I hear you ask. And yet again I’d be surprised, to tell you that it was to watch the extra songs Robbie Williams performed for Friday Night with Jonathan Ross.
Now, maybe I’m simply a sucker or maybe my brain’s finally decided to rebel and has somehow managed to shake loose my deep routed pop cynicism, but I found Robbie endearing, his lyrics intimate and refreshing and his whole performance captivating. I don’t think I’d ever really properly listened to Feel and No Regrets before and they both left me thinking that OK, we’re all a bit screwed up, but let’s not take it too seriously, we’re all in this together after all – Robbie included. Robbie, who if his new tracks are anything to go by, is in a pretty warm and fuzzy place at the moment (fear not, he’s still got his trademark edge) but, ironically, he does seem to be the ideal person in the ideal place at the ideal time to be asking that trying question that we all need to be asking ourselves right now ‘How do you rate the morning sun?’
You can tell he’s in love. I think I might be too. It’s time for us all to get back to basics and fall back in love with Robbie.
I have a secret soft spot for Robbie. Maybe because of his Midlands roots (born in Stoke, Port Vale supporter), not taking himself too seriously (the James Bond of pop)or his ambivalence towards the opposite sex (Angels is about his Mum not some babe).
His latest album out on Spotify (http://open.spotify.com/album/7Dh9uAr5Pv3RVs65jyRrDy )is great.
Missed Jonathan Ross program hopefully I can catch it on Youtube or iPlayer.
I saw that and tend to agree, although I did find it slightly ironic when Robbie dedicated Angels to Serena 'I'm going to take that ball and shove it down your throat' Williams.
