Fools Paradise
So much for democracy.
Since the system was changed from panel to viewer votes in 1998 Britain, France, Germany and Spain (the core funders) have fared badly. Seemingly Eastern European viewers vote for each other whereas Western Europeans don’t quite have the same solidarity.
Never mind. A quick rules change was put in place so each country’s votes are now made up of 50% expert panel (this used to make up 100% when we were winning regularly) and just 50% viewers.
And the result? 5th place. Not quite the 1987 win by Katrina and The Waves, but a damn site better than the nil points awarded to Jemini’s 2003 attempt.
But has the UK’s pride really been restored as the BBC claims, or are we just playing God again? |
