It's your life

It's making us better, its making us ill

Is anyone else concerned about the contraceptive pill being offered over the counter? Both my sister and I have had to deal with adult acne recently as a result of going on the pill at a young age, for period pains. Seems like this law will encourage even more girls to go on the pill, without really considering the potential consequences.

I appreciate that many need better access to contraception, so how about at least accompanying this new law with more published research to help equip young women with the info they need to make their own choices about contraception, rather than having their decision forced upon them by government policies?

In NZ and Australia the pill is hardly ever prescribed as they favour the coil, believing it to have fewer side affects. If this is the case, and the pill has known links to both ovary and breat cancer, why is the pill the only form of contraceptive really being pushed at young women in the UK today?

Oh, and look out, first 8 litres of water a day is not necessarily good for you, then vitamins may lead to an early death, and dairy products are still up for debate. What next? Exercise makes you fat in the long term? Just don’t wait for the government to tell you so, or you’ll be dead.

It's hard to get hold of any concrete facts on this, but Jane Plant, a government adviser, has written several books claiming that dairy products are linked to breast cancer and osteoporosis.

Her thinking is based on research that shows that countries such as those in Asia where dairy products are rarely eaten, have hardly any cases of breast cancer or osteoporosis and countries that eat the most dairy products, such as the UK and America have the highest number of cases.

She claims there is as much evidence to link breast cancer to dairy products as there is to link lung cancer to smoking. I suppose if you think about it, as mammals ourselves, it is a bit unnatural to consume another mammal's milk. Jane had breast cancer 5 times before she discovered the link and cut out diary products. She has not had it since, which is pretty convincing in itself!

As for the calcium benefits of milk, she suggests that there's far too much calcium is cows milk as it is meant for calves, not full grown humans. When we eat dairy products, we get too much calcium which encourages our bones to renew themselves. Good in the short term, but in the longer term not so good, as our bones have a set number of times they can renew: If we use them up to soon, this will lead to osteoporosis when we are older.

If only diary products weren't so linked to our economy, then there might be some more info available on this issue.

What's the debate around dairy products? Good for your bones but high in fat?
