Racing Rats
Massive budgets, great pay, flexitime, loads of holidays and minimal effort required. The public sector is the place to be employed these days. At a time when commercial companies are drastically cutting back, this is the time of year, even in a recession, when the COI and Department of Health spend, spend, spend. And quickly – all work needs to be completed by the end of March 2009, otherwise departments might not get as much money thrown at them again next year.
Advertising, Marketing and PR agencies across London are in the process of whipping up quick objectives, strategies and deployment plans for what they know to be completely unnecessary campaigns. Hundreds of thousands of pounds are being wasted as groups of 12 people sit round a table discussing such trivial issues as how many times a dot should flash on a tiny animated banner promoting that clearly unheard of, and financially astute brand; the NHS, and supplier budgets are being put together based on the standard: ‘How big a chunk of this Christmas pie can we get our hands on this year, do you think?’
And what do we as tax-payers get for our money? Well, some flashing dots and a lot of talk basically, as no-one in the public sector will make a decision; they’re all too scared to rock the boat and lose their job. And, once you’re in, why would you ever want to leave? There is no cushier number in UK employment. The pay is as good as, if not better than, the commercial equivalent, it’s easy to accumulate more than 30 days holiday a year, work flexible hours and earn a contributory pension, and even the offices are quite snazzy these days. You’re probably thinking ‘How can I get myself into this nice little earner?’ The secret is who you know I’m afraid, so get ready for some smoozing. Then, if you’re one of the lucky joiners, just brown-nose the right people and you’ll effortlessly jump levels of promotion and pay.
Who cares if it causes the entire country to stagnate; an easy existence is all that matters isn’t it? |
